Born in 1789, Sarah Baartman was a south African woman of Khoi descent. In 1810 she was abducted by an Afrikaner farmer, Hendrik Caezar, and brought to London where she was put on show as an anatomical freak - because of the 'unusual' appearance of her buttocks and genitals. She died in poverty in Paris in 1816.
